The Matrix CODE

Matrix CODE is a Kick-ass Collaboration with Tech Partners.

A training program teaching industry-ready coding to African Nova Scotians who face systematic barriers to employment.

Code Your Future

Coding has become a huge part of requirements other than assets in the industry of programming, here is how we helped our first cohort of participants.

Goals

The goal of this program is two-fold: create skills and create employment opportunities for ANS youth that have been in conflict with the law or at high risk for becoming in conflict with the law, we like to refer to this group as “high priority”.

Developing skills to allow them the opportunity to pursue a software development profession will enable them to gain access to a labour market that will be in high demand in the coming years. Exposure to this profession will help them get experience within the workforce, add to their resume, increase their network of individuals that will lead to mentorships and employment while exposing them to an entrepreneurial environment by enabling them to gain experience in this type of business approach.

Objectives of the program

Objectives of this program will align with the overall goals of skills and employment opportunities, where the program would like to see 8 participants complete the following:

  • Youth participants will acquire the technical and employability skills they will need to succeed in an entry-level IT job in Nova Scotia.

  • Participants will secure permanent IT jobs with a Nova Scotia IT company at the end of a paid internship or start their own business.

Program Overview

During this 12-month training, all 8 participants will be learning through the program with 3 sectors, including online training, in-person training and internship placement at local startups for exposure to real-life programming situations.

All participants will be taught basic information about using two of the most major coding languages, Javascript and Python, which takes 29.49% and 19.57% share of the worlds’ most used coding languages in Oct 2019.
